Basic Chess Strategies

Use king safety, piece activity and tactical checks.

Before moving, inspect checks, captures and threats for both sides. Ask whether your intended move leaves a piece undefended or opens a line toward your king.

Improve your least active piece. Rooks often work well on open files, bishops need clear diagonals, and knights benefit from protected central squares. A plan must respond to the actual position.

Practice spotting forks, pins and skewers in real games. Material values are guides, not guarantees: a pawn is roughly one, a knight or bishop three, a rook five and a queen nine. King safety can outweigh material.
